The project involves the construction and operation of a river-based inland container terminal at the banks of the Dholeswari River, having a handling capacity of 120,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) p.a. and a storage capacity of 2,500 TEU; and acquisition of up to 5 container vessels with 100-140 TEU capacity to operate a regular shipment and transshipment service between Chittagong and Dhaka.  The terminal will be the country’s first privately run river container port and it is projected that it will significantly reduce the cost of goods moved between the two trading hubs, bolstering trade and also reducing the growing demand on land and road infrastructure for sustaining movement of forecasted import-export volumes.

The project is being implemented by Summit Alliance Port Limited and has received debt financing from Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) and Nederlandse Financierings-Maatschappij Voor Ontwikkelingslanden N.V. (FMO).
